History

The Vapriikki Museum Centre is located in a former Tampella factory workshop on the banks of the Tammerkoski rapids. The oldest parts of Vapriikki were built in the 1880s. The largest exhibition space—a factory hall one hundred meters long and sixteen meters high—dates back to the 1910s and 1920s.

Tampella manufactured, among other things, locomotives, turbines, and damask linen textiles. The textile industry ended in the 1970s, and over time, industry has completely moved out of the buildings along the rapids.

The Vapriikki Museum Centre opened in the old factory in the autumn of 1996. In 2017, Vapriikki was named the Museum of the Century.
