Maritime Centre Vellamo

The Museum of Kymenlaakso is located in Maritime Centre Vellamo. At the museum, you can experience life on the borderlands, the surging riverbanks, and the rugged history of an industrial province and port city. In addition to the Kymenlaakso Museum, Vellamo is also home to the Finnish Maritime Museum. Together, the museums provide insight into seeing your own life, family, and heritage as part of the broader flow of history. There are no ready-made answers or single truths—just keys to new ways of thinking. Through personal experiences, visitors can create links between the past, present, and future.

Vellamo rises in Kotka’s old Kantasatama harbor like a giant wave. Its striking architecture makes a powerful impression. Inside, warm oak—a traditional shipbuilding material—dominates the interior spaces. In summer, the museum’s offerings expand with access to historic vessels: the icebreaker Tarmo, the lightship Kemi, and the patrol boat Telkkä are open to the public.

The location of Maritime Centre Vellamo couldn’t be more fitting. In the 1870s, Kotka was a small sawmill town with no harbor. That changed dramatically in 1890 when the railway arrived, facilitating the transport of wood-based products. Gradually, Kotka’s port grew to become the largest export harbor in Finland.

After World War II, Kymenlaakso became one of the world’s leading paper producers. Today, Southeast Finland hosts one of the largest forest industry hubs in Europe. The Museum of Kymenlaakso’s immersive exhibition Puun vuoro (“The Turn of the Tree”) highlights the unsung heroes of the forest industry—a multi-generational field that continues to shape the urban and cultural landscape of Kymenlaakso. The exhibition honors this valuable raw material, showing how it can be transformed into something greater than itself.

Maritime Centre Vellamo also features a sustainable, locally-focused museum shop, a sea-view restaurant, rentable spaces for meetings, events, and celebrations, and a guest marina. Vellamo holds the Green Key sustainability certificate and the Sustainable Travel Finland label. It is also included in the Museum Card and Kaikukortti programs.

History

Maritime Centre Vellamo is located in Kotka’s Kantasatama, right in the middle of a traditional harbor setting. The location couldn’t be more fitting. In the early years of the city, during the 1870s, there was no proper port yet. Sailing ships arriving to collect sawn timber would dock at the sawmill shore or anchor offshore while awaiting transport.

The Pakkahuone pier was completed in 1879 in the very area where Vellamo stands today. With the addition of a lemonade kiosk built by pharmacist Grahn, the harbor began to transform into a gathering place where locals met friends and watched the bustle of port life.

Over the decades, this sheltered harbor expanded, reclaiming space from the sea using sawdust and ships’ ballast. A major step toward a larger port was taken in 1890 with the arrival of the railway, which greatly improved the transport of goods.

The early decades of the 1900s brought change, as manual cargo handling gave way to mechanization and manpower was replaced by machines.

The operations of Kantasatama diminished after the opening of the Hietanen Port in 1971 and the deep-water port of Mussalo in 1989. Nevertheless, the traditional look of the old port—complete with cranes—remains, preserved around Maritime Centre Vellamo for the future.

The Kymenlaakso Museum houses thousands of unique stories: industrial history, islands once ceded to other nations, memories of Europe’s largest naval battle, coast guard operations, and the rapids of the Kymi River. The museum’s roots go back to 1927, and since 1981, it has covered the entire province. Many events have shaped its journey through the decades, and with the opening of Maritime Centre Vellamo, the museum gained a new, impressive setting for its activities.
